    1. I’m glad that if I amaze you, it’s not in the worst possible way 😉 I can’t figure this one out either – I can’t understand why anyone would do something from which there is no profit but embarrassing someone.

  1. haha i’ve always been a tad disconcerted by my webcam, especially when i do strange and undignified things in front of it. one cannot help but pull one’s hair and grimace when reading a piece of awful fiction and poetry on WordPress. it didn’t help that the webcam was used by a serial killer in the Brit television show, Luther…

    1. Haha 😀 I used to be embarrassed about my camera too, but since I have a cat, who habitually follows me to the bathroom, I sort of got used to being under surveillance. I spend my whole day sitting at the computer, and while I’m not doing anything terrible, I certainly wouldn’t want to see online a footage of myself in a torn shirt (the cat’s fault again), donning bed hair, eating my pasta with a fork and spilling sauce in my lap while watching Game of Thrones on the laptop. Sorry for putting the mental image in your mind 😮

  2. You know, it’s a bloody shame we have to do this. Some folks are just sick and evil – my Mac has had a piece of electrical tape over the cam eye for a long time now. Mac webcams have a habit of staying on, solutions to turn it off seem to have evaporated. I expect more from Apple but whatever, break out the tape. I also disabled the audio side of the webcam. I am glad you are so security conscious. We could probably chat for hours over coffee and computer/web stuff. 👍🏻❤️

    1. Yes, it is a shame. I still tend to cling to the (apparently misled) belief that common sense exists and that people act with a purpose. Not those people who would hack your camera though.

I’m not as security conscious as I should be. My passwords, to name but one issue, need some more work and love.

A tech talk over coffee? I’m in. I’ll bring my own booze 😉

  3. I think its about feeling safe and that to me is very important. I use the web cam for facetime/skype and that is all…..not much here to capture and promote as weirdness…..

    1. Yes, it’s better to be on the safe side. The issue is that even when you don’t use your camera, once your computer is running, the camera can be activated remotely without your knowledge. And when someone lives in one room only, like me, they’re bound to in the camera’s field of view most of the time. So whether I do weird things or not really, I don’t want to be exposed to observation in my home…

  4. Oh my goodness … I’ve never thought of this! And I even watched that show, Luther, that the other commenter mentioned — I’d forgotten about that part.

It’s really sad they have to invent things like this, but it’s like with everything else in this world; there’s such a meanness.

    1. I have heard of cam security concerns before, but it originally didn’t occur to me that anyone would actually be doing it, recording footage of you doing your thing, whatever it is, just for the sake of “amusement”. Now that I’ve read more on the topic, I see that it is happening, so I think it’s really for the best to stick some cover on your cam, whether a fancy one like me or just a piece of tape.

      1. Creepy, to say the least. I’ve thought about it now. If they were to do it here, they’d see me. If I wasn’t on the computer, they’d see a wall. This is in a corner, so nobody could pass by in any way. While I’m sitting here, I’d react right away if the green light went on …

  5. I went with a piece of washi tape that has “good times” printed on it in pink cursive. I usually leave my laptop open in hotel rooms and I am often in hotel rooms and not usually completely clothed – eek! You’ve found a cool solution.

    1. Oh, that is a lovely solution! It must look really nice 🙂 – and it’s also functional, of course!

One of the reasons why I hesitated to cover my cam with a tape was that I sometimes might want to use it, and I don’t want to bother un-taping and re-taping it. I’m glad that I found a solution that works for me 🙂
