What I Hated the Least Today 94/365: Snowhite

I recently joined the ranks of most people and equipped myself with a tablet. I was resisting for a long time because I regarded tablets as luxury tools of entertainment that I shouldn’t afford. Then I found a hybrid of a tablet and a laptop, which is tablet-sized, tablet-like but has an optional docking keyboard for when one means typing business. I picked this particular tablet because of the keyboard – and because it’s white. I’m the kind of person who purchases things based on colour and I’m not even ashamed of my silliness.

Based on an inner feeling in my guts, I determined that my tablet would be male and called him Snowhite. Yes, he’s a male Snow White, and so far he hasn’t expressed desire to switch gender. Since I’ve been commuting, for two or more hours a day, I’ve been carrying him around at all times. I’ve tentatively learned the time management skill that I admired in other people who just work or play as they go rather than staring blankly out of the window on their commute. Something to hate with less than my usual fierceness.

  1. I do find your posts so very entertaining which I am sure you must find somewhat irritating after you go to so much trouble to come across as anything but funny…..but you are and I request from my side of the world that you maintain this high standard you have set yourself because, lets face it, you have started something you must keep up….hope your weekend is a good break for you away from academia….can I ask which branch of academia you grace on a daily basis?

    1. I surely don’t find it irritating that you find my posts entertaining! I do find it puzzling though that people seem to be most entertained when I’m at my most serious.

I’m in the humanities, English Literature, specifically, and I wouldn’t wish this evil on anyone. Fortunately, I hate myself, so I’m good.

I do hope I’ll keep my 365 project up, I’m a bit behind now, so I’m catching up and flooding my poor follower’s mailboxes with junk notifications.

      1. You see your serious is happening in your head, we respond to what we see. It’s that magically curious turn of phrase you have which tickles the fancy of your readers. English Lit eh…I see…I did that when I was going thru Uni and discovered some wonderful lecturers. And I almost read a few of the set books.

          1. Well no but I have to say it was far better than Teachers College. I had some lecturers who gave me a love of Literature and an insight I didn’t have then. When your teacher inspires you to go out and read the book again that is saying something. I did arts as I taught English/History at the time and I needed the degree to earn more money so I had a different view of study then to what I have now. Somehow between children and work and an insane wife I finished it but I still had my moments like failing exams and going back to try again. I display my degree to remind me of the huge effort I had to make to get it….the best lesson I learned was understanding that we all come at language from our own contexts so there fore we see in someones writing things they may never consider and that is ok……you don’t have to agree with them but their take is valid from their perspective.

          2. I’d love a student like you who appreciates the chance to get some education and does some effort. But then, it would be too ideal, so I’d better stick with my zombies. I must be nice to have a sense of accomplishment. I keep my diplomas at the bottom of a drawer and don’t even care.

  2. It looks really neat! Good choice! I bought a keyboard, which also works as a cover, for my iPad. It took some time before I added that, but when I was about to go home on a visit, I realised I would be typing so much so I just had to …

    1. Of course, an iPad is a completely different thing πŸ˜‰ I’ve done a lot of research into Apple devices since I’m about to buy a new laptop, but eventually arrived at the predictable result – there’s no way I could afford it – so I’ve chosen the best non-Apple laptop that I can afford. Well, I can’t, really, but whatever. The current laptop is quite literally dying on me.

        1. It’s a shame for sure but perhaps at some point I’ll be able to get my hands at a Mac too πŸ™‚ Yes, I have done my homework and found that stability and reliability are core features of Mac (absent in Windows).

          1. I haven’t had any sense of stability in Windows since those days when the operative system came on 20 floppy disks and I felt I was in control. After Win7 they went SO wrong … They probably thought that everyone would go for touch screen — everything seems to be made with that in mind.

          2. Yes, you are right. In my research I found that Windows are deliberately designed for touchscreens now, which is not the way I want to go. I’m not a fan of touchscreens if I can avoid it – I hate how the screen is always so filthy and full of fingerprints… It doesn’t sit well with my OCD.

  3. Snow White… Fantastic πŸ˜€ Oh and I totally understand you – I went into the store a few weeks ago and just asked for a white TV… didn’t care about anything else, just wanted it to be white…^^

    1. Awe, it’s so great to hear that I’m not the only freak who, besides functionality, looks for a specific colour! I was on a mission to have all my devices white, and mission has been accomplished. My laptop, tablet and phone are all white πŸ™‚ TV I don’t have, but if I did, it would have to be white too.

      1. It only means you’ve got style πŸ˜‰ My new external HD is white – the salesman had to help me root through the HD basket to find the right colour… He even found a berry coloured one and suggested it but I told him it had to be white… πŸ˜€ If I ever buy a new computer or laptop, it will be white as well. As for the phone – I still have my two dinosaures, but if the day ever comes for a Smartphone, you know what it will look like… I think my tablet is white already as well πŸ˜€ Go white, go go go!!!

        1. Hahaha, a great story! I hope the salesman appreciated your style too! I used to go for red devices earlier, but somehow I got tired of such a striking colour and now I prefer to keep it muted – white. Let’s hope our stylish devices will work fine and long πŸ™‚

          1. …so funny you mention red – when it came to settle on a colour for the printer I insisted it to be red because a) it was going to be in my room anyhow and b) my room was decorated in reddish colours… Now I look at it and could smack myself because for once I should’ve listened to The Man’s choice of white to keep it simple… oh well… πŸ˜€

          2. Ha πŸ˜€ My room is red and white, but my printer is black 😦 There wasn’t that much choice, but now that you mention it, I’m bothered by my black printer. I hope it breaks soon so I could get a new matchy one. Just joking πŸ˜‰

          3. …yeah I was going to write that as well but I know by experience that you have to be careful about what you wish for… πŸ˜‰ You could wrap it in a different colour πŸ˜€ I saw a lady wrap her washing mashine in the kitchen with some teal sticky foil to match the decor – it looked fantastic πŸ˜€

          4. I see what you mean by the foils you can apply on your stuff to make it match! It looks awesome. But it surely takes some skill to wrap it properly, so I’m not even going to try it.

          5. The missus didn’t wrap the machine, she merely placed the foil onto the front. Haven’t tried it myself but I think that yes, you’d have to have a still hand and work exactly in order to make it look right…
